The Kick in the Pants You Didn’t Know You Needed

Growing your own food is such an important skill to have, arguably more important now than ever. Make no mistake, the prices in the grocery store WILL skyrocket and/or in an attempt to keep costs low, corners will be cut and you and your health will be paying the price. If you have only dabbled with gardening before or even not at all, that’s good enough. No experience necessary.

You Don’t Have Space

There is this common misconception that you need tons of space to grow food- spoiler alert, you don’t. You can grow tomatoes in a pot, potatoes in a bucket, and herbs on your windowsill.

You Don’t Have the Right Tools

It doesn’t matter that you don’t have a tiller and it doesn’t matter that you don’t have raised beds; you don’t need them to grow food. You don’t need special tools. You don’t need the latest and greatest.

You Don’t Know What To Do

Does anyone when they first start? I remember growing marigolds in our first grade classroom, so it can’t be rocket science.  You just have to start somewhere, and where you’re at is good enough.

You Don’t Know Which Seeds To Buy

Luckily for you, seeds are sold almost everywhere. Walmart, the hardware store, even online if you’d rather not leave your house. You don’t need the highest quality seeds to to get started.

You Don’t Know What Seeds To Plant

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter. Plant what you’ll eat, you’ll just end up planting more the next year anyway.

You Don’t Want To Plant Seeds

You don’t have to! Farmers markets are excellent for buying started plants. For the past several years I’ve always bought a handful of plants from a particular lady because she uses organic practices, she’s a wealth of knowledge, and I like her plants.

You Don’t Have Time

Yeah… there’s no getting around this one, no one is going to do the work for you. And I totally get it too. My husband and I work opposite shifts and my kids don’t nap, meaning I literally do not get any child free time to get shit done. Sometimes the garden has more weeds than I’d like or the zucchinis get a little out of control; it’s not perfect by any means but we still have managed to put away food every single year. If you have enough time to watch TV or scroll your phone, you have enough time to maintain a garden.
