On Buying Local
Buying locally sourced goods doesn’t have to be hard. There are so many eager farmers and producers who would love to sell you their products! Not only does buying local goods help sustain local producers, but it also supports the local economy and ecosystem.
For example, most honey is imported from China; doesn’t it seem counterintuitive to ship honey thousands and thousands of miles when we have our very own honeybees that pollinate our flowers, plants, and trees in our backyards? Not to mention, most honey purchased from the supermarket is sold in plastic containers that get tossed and inevitably end up in a landfill, whereas local honey is often sold in reusable glass jars.
Not even sure how to buy local? Farmers’ markets are a great place to start! It’s truly a snowball effect- perhaps you start by buying local honey, then local maple syrup, then before long you’re buying local eggs, local flour, local apples, local pork, local soap from goat milk, and so on and so forth. What can you buy local today?
